they can’t liquify what’s already a sea.
subspace, formless mouth
forming
restless sea
resting
.
birthday tides
waves of embrace
countless coffees
the details of our life together
in an unspoken form, a form
unspeakable
and what can’t be spoken
is born through the motion of water
.
they can’t liquify what
is already a sea
.
what if I shuffled the sunset
so night could blossom
at a more convenient time
.
I could tie ropes like my grandmother taught me
and hook them over the creaky sky
to surge through free-falling clouds
between space and time
I could wrestle the sickly light
into a cradle of long songs
eternally bathing in unthinkable sound
like the front door opening
and your boots sliding off
and a question you’ve been meaning to ask me
and shopping bags on the sofa
like the sound of you coming home
and the day breathing its last
they can’t liquify
what is already
the great, wide sun

‘Causality’ is a poem by Yousaf Khawaja. This is part 10/25 of their online digital poetry shorts, with the aim of having a purely digital collection by the end. In their words:
“It’s actually been way more difficult than I imagined, usually having to confine myself to short Insta squares or little boxes. But that’s the point, it’s also allowed me to play more with visuals, which is something I’ve weirdly enjoyed. Never really considered myself much of a designer, but it’s rewarding to be able to play with how you physically structure poetry. It can be as vivid written down and it is spoken aloud.

Thank you Yousaf!
